Serenus
Photographed in the remote expanses of the Namibian desert, Serenus is a study of stillness, rhythm, and space. Layered dunes and subtle tonal shifts draw the eye slowly through the landscape, while a storm gathers quietly on the horizon — a moment suspended between calm and change. Shot on film, the image underwent an unexpected transformation during traditional E-6 processing. A brief exposure to light caused natural solarisation, subtly reshaping the sky and softening highlights into muted greys. Initially dismissed, this frame revealed itself as the one image where chance and subject aligned in rare harmony. Serenus is not only a photograph of a place, but a reminder that some moments are shaped as much by grace as by intention.
Arid Wilderness No.2
Arid Wilderness No. 2 presents an expansive Namibian desert landscape reduced to its most essential elements — land, light, and silence. Weathered rock formations rise gently from the plains, their forms softened by distance and dust, while the vast openness between them invites stillness rather than movement. The image has been treated with a lithographic process, lending it a quiet, almost archival quality. Subtle tonal shifts replace contrast, allowing texture and form to speak softly rather than declare themselves. The result is an image that feels suspended outside of time — neither anchored to a specific moment nor defined by place alone.
Euphorbia Duet
Euphorbia Duet captures a quiet dialogue between resilience and space. Two succulent forms emerge from the vast Namibian desert, their sculptural silhouettes standing in gentle contrast to the openness that surrounds them. Isolated yet connected, they echo one another across the frame, creating a subtle visual rhythm within the emptiness. Photographed on film, the image reveals delicate tonal transitions and a grounded sense of place. The harshness of the desert is softened by light, allowing the textures of the earth and the living forms to coexist in balance rather than opposition. This work is less about survival and more about presence — a quiet reminder that even in the most unforgiving landscapes, life finds its own measured, dignified way to endure.
Whale Bone
"Whale Bone" is a truly spectacular artwork captured masterfully by Koos van der Lende. The photograph depicts the striking image of a whalebone resting on a beach adorned with shells. The composition highlights the juxtaposition of strength and fragility, as the robustness of the whalebone contrasts with the delicate shells scattered around it. This captivating artwork invites viewers to contemplate the beauty and significance of nature's offerings while reflecting on the interconnectedness of life and the stories embedded within these organic relics.
Dead Vlei
Dead Vlei presents a quiet study of endurance and time. Ancient trees lie frozen within a vast clay pan, their dark, sculptural forms etched against the pale surface of the desert. Stripped of colour, the black-and-white treatment distils the scene to its essentials — light, shadow, texture, and form. Photographed on film, the image reveals extraordinary tonal depth, from the cracked earth underfoot to the soft gradients of the surrounding dunes. The fallen trunks trace a gentle rhythm across the frame, guiding the eye through a landscape shaped by centuries rather than moments. This is not an image of desolation, but of stillness — a place where time has paused, allowing the viewer to contemplate nature’s quiet authority and the beauty found in permanence without movement.
196
196 is a study of distance, direction, and quiet human presence within an otherwise boundless landscape. A solitary marker stands beside a railway line cutting through the Namibian desert, its number offering the only clear reference point in a vast, open terrain. Photographed on film, the image draws strength from its simplicity. The parallel lines of the track lead the eye toward the horizon, while the scattered grasses and shifting light soften the severity of the desert floor. Subtle tonal gradations reveal the patience of the medium and the stillness of the moment. Neither destination nor departure is defined here. Instead, 196 speaks of passage — a pause along a long journey — where time slows and the landscape quietly asserts its scale, rhythm, and permanence.

About the Panoramic Works
These selected panoramic landscapes reflect Koos van de Lende’s quiet, considered approach to photographing the South African landscape. Working with scale and stillness, his panoramas are created to be experienced slowly — allowing space, atmosphere, and subtle shifts in light to shape the image.
